2008 FALL EDUCATION EVENT
Posted: December 21st, 2008
On November 9th, 2008 the Glenview Hangar One Foundation and the N.A.S.G. Museum held their Fall Education Event honoring John Davies and celebrating the 20th anniversary showing of Top Guns of ’43. The movie was remarkable, Marty Robinson’s presence as MC enjoyable and John Davies comments regarding the creation of the movie were fascinating. Showing of the movie was made possible with the cooperation of WTTW11.
This kick-off event for the education campaign was held at North Shore Country Club in Glenview. Guests were able to ask questions of the writers of the movie-John Davies and Tom Wolfe who were thrilled to be able to be a part of the day’s activities. The evening ended with a live auction that featured three unique opportunities for aviation lovers: a ride in a
Navy N3N, a SNJ, AT-6 and an Extra 300.

As to the future efforts of Hangar One: we continue working towards the goal of securing land on the Naval Air Station to build a permanent, larger museum and learning center while operating our current location. The new facility will house aircraft significant to NASG including our Coast Guard helicopter from the Museum of Science and Industry. The learning center will incorporate expanded curriculum with the local school districts to provide hands-on history along with math, science and leadership programs through the Challenger program.

Our freedom and our way of life are built on the contribution and sacrifice
of those who served our country. It is our duty to preserve their memory and
pass it along to our children and our children’s children.
Glenview Hangar One Foundation is committed to preserving the history of Naval
Air Station Glenview and those who served here though our museum and educational
programs. We continue to expand our museum holdings (e.g. our recent acquisition
of a NASG Coast Guard helicopter from the Museum of Science and Industry) and
develop new educational opportunities such as:
- Guided walking tours of the former Naval Air Station-now The Glen
- Featured guest lectures by noted aviation specialists
- Applied learning experiences for high school students on projects such as
documenting the history of the period through conversations of WWII veterans
Meanwhile, planning continues for our major goal of building a Challenger
Learning Center to serve our community’s middle school-aged students.
Please join our visionary donors who support the educational
mission of Glenview Hangar One Foundation as we preserve the past and shape the
future!

Navy Park & Memorial Brick Program
|
For the
first time in history, Naval Air Station Glenview is open to the public.
Enjoy all of the wonders of The Glen and its Town Center. Please remember
to pause from time to time in Navy Park to appreciate the many veterans of
NASG, who are honored in the granite bricks that pave the paths of the
park, who contributed their time and lives so that we can live as free
people in a safe nation. For more news and
information on Navy Park please visit Navy Park
or see the Navy Park dedication on October 17th,2003
"The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, will be directly proportional to
how they perceive the veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by
their nation" —President George Washington

The
Navy Park Memorial Brick Program was initiated to fund the purchase of the
three bronze statues of the Navy Aircrew man, Yellow jacket and Sailor
Mechanic replicated from the Naval Museum in Pensacola FL, and to provide
Hangar One contributors an opportunity to memorialize a veteran in Navy
Park.

Hangar One and Glen Town Center |
|
As Hangar One is listed on the National Register of Historical Places, the
eventual goal of Hangar One was realized when developer OliverMcMillan
preserved the control tower and north and south pod facades of Hangar One,
along with certain structural components. In addition, the development
included the creation of Navy Park, the Naval Air Station Glenview
Museum, and the inclusion of NASG memorabilia into The Glen Town Center. The final
result of the Glen Town Center truly represents a Memorial to Freedom to
the veterans of Naval Air Station Glenview, and to all of the men and
women who served, or have served in the armed forces of the US.

 Challenger Learning Center |
|
The
realization of a Challenger Learning Center in Glenview is another
one of the more important goals of the Foundation since its
inception. In 2000, Hangar One obtained a license from the Challenger
Center for Space Science Education to operate a Challenger
Learning Center in Northern Illinois. Founded by the families of the
Challenger |
 | 51-L
crew, after the Challenger disaster in 1986, the Challenger Center for
Space Science Education’s mission is for middle-school aged
students to
explore and learn in a space oriented, hands on simulator environment that
promotes a lifetime interest in mathematics, science and technology
related fields.
There are approximately 46 Challenger Learning
Centers located throughout the world, including one in Woodstock IL and
one in Bloomington, IL. Staffed by master teachers, the core of a
Challenger Learning Center is a two-room simulator, consisting of a space
station and a mission control center patterned after NASA’s Johnson Space
Center, and a scientific space lab ready for exploration. Hangar One
believes the realization of a Challenger Learning Center in Glenview will
enable certain students, from schools located in the greater Chicagoland
area, to achieve ranks at the highest educational levels in the United
States, in the areas of physical sciences and mathematics. More
information about Challenger in Illinois can be found here Read More

FORGET ME NOT by Bruce R.
Knuth
On January 4th,
1937 the first of you came to see me. I had just
been born, but I remember you all. As I grew,
still more of you came, some of you even brought your families. You came, times of war, times of conflict, times of
Police actions and even times of peace. You came
because, we as a nation felt that it was only right to be prepared, well trained and at the ready if needed. Some of you came from far away, And only stopped to rest briefly with me before you
returned to your mission. I remember you all, as I
know you still remember me. I remember those of
you from long ago. I remember those of you who
left and did not return. I remember those of you
who are far away. I remember those of you who are
here today. I will never forget any of you. Your memories might fade, but I will always remember
our past. The joys, the sorrows, the good times
and the bad times. We shared it all. We will never
forget. Now, at the ripe old age of 58, I must
leave you. But I know, through all of you I will
never be forgotten. Who am I you ask? NBU – Naval Air Station
