Visit The Naval Air Station Glenview Museum! The
NASGM is open on Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday from Noon to 5:00
pm. The new facility is located at 2040 Lehigh Avenue in Glenview on the eastern
perimeter of the former base property. The museum is also available for groups
and special events by appointment during the week. Please call 847-657-0000 for

Mission
Statement Commemorate the Historical Contribution and Mission of the
Men and Women who served at Naval Air Station Glenview (“NASG”).
Strategic Initiative To
develop within the property of Naval Air Station Glenview (the Glen), an
integrated NASG Museum facility that continues the Naval Air Station’s mission
of education and training.
Tactical Execution Construct a permanent NASG Museum that
communicates the historical contributions of NASG to world history, while
inspiring interactive learning in math, science and technology.
The
NASG Museum will emphasize the Golden Age of Aviation, through its pivotal role
in the Allied victory in World War II, and continuing its mission through the
Cold War, Korean War, Vietnam War and Gulf War. As an interactive aviation-based
museum, it will provide opportunities for adults and children to blend NASG
history and aviation technology while participating in math, science and
technology-based educational programs.
| To
veterans of the Naval Air Station Glenview (“NASG”), and to many long-time
residents of Glenview, the decision in April 1993 to close NASG was
devastating news. Over its 58-year history, NASG played important military
roles in four major wars and in peacetime readiness, provided homeland
security, and was part of shaping the culture of Glenview. NASG was home
base for many of Chicago’s annual air and water shows, and when the Blue
Angels, Thunderbirds or any number of high-tech military aircraft were
stationed here, the ultimate air performances were over the skies of
Glenview. NASG hosted its own Air Expos, featuring dogfights between
fighter planes, precision flying by Team America, and static displays of
vintage and state-of-the-art aircraft. The last NAS Glenview Air Expo was
held in August of 1993, and attracted over 70,000 visitors who honored
such NASG alumni as George Bush, Gerald Ford, Butch O’Hare and Neil
Armstrong. :: Read More :: |

growth leading to the larger museum with a Challenger Learning Center for
the youth of our area.”.
The Foundation’s goal is to secure land on the Naval Air

NASG Museum Grand
Opening July 8, 2006
Picture Caption: (from left to right. Bill Marquardt, President GHOF,
Paul Detlefs, Glenview Village Trustee, Capt. Chuck Downey, Congressman
Mark Kirk and Mike Melbinger, Director GHOF and Chairman Fundraising
Committee On a warm and sunny Saturday
afternoon over two hundred guests and dignitaries attended the grand
opening of the new location for the Naval Air Station Glenview Museum on
Lehigh Avenue, on the Western perimeter fence of the original Air Station
property. After the posting of the colors, provided by the Great Lakes
Naval Training Center, Bill Marquardt welcomed those in attendance and
spoke of the world-changing historical significance of NASG. Marquardt
spoke about the mission of GHOF and the need for the continued operation
of a working museum to tell the unique story of the people and missions of
NASG. The continued effort to fund the on-going operation of this new
museum site along with the long-range plan to develop and build a larger,
permanent museum and Challenger Learning center was clearly defined by
Marquardt.
On introduction, Congressman Mark Kirk spoke of
the importance of the museum’s work to comemmorate and educate future
generations of the significance of NASG’s mission. As an active Naval
Reservists and veteran, Congressman Kirk reminded the audience of the need
to keep our past and current members of service in mind at all times;
during all time of war and peace. Director and Chairman of the
Fundraising Committee, Mike Melbinger, talked about the fall fundraising
event to be held on October 29, 2006 at the new Westin in Wheeling
Illinois. Mike also announced and introduced the year’s special honoree,
Captain Chuck Downey. Captain Downey was the youngest Naval Aviator of
WWII, carrier qualified on the Sable out of NASG and later served at NASG
for more than 14 years after the war.
Capt. Downey then shared his feelings being back
at the base. Visiting the museum and seeing so many exhibits brought back
memories of a critical time in our history. He is looking forward to the
operation of this museum, its future growth and his support for the
mission.
First Speaker’s Night
Held at the Museum:
The
first in a series of guest speaker events featured Mr. Taras Lyssenko of
A&T Recovery. It was hosted by Lowell Wallace, Director on June 22 at
the N.A.S.G. Museum. The evening was a great success with more than forty
guests attending Mr. Lyssenko’s presentation on the recovery of Navy
aircraft from the bottom of Lake Michigan. A&T Recovery has been
responsible for raising more that 30 aircraft since the late 1980’s. The
presentation featured first hand commentary and video footage of aircraft
on the bottom of Lake Michigan and being recovered by Mr. Lyssenko. Guests
were able to hold some of the artifacts that were recovered from the
salvaged aircraft. The evening closed with a long question and answer
period, along with a good discussion on the opportunity of raising more
aircraft in the future. It was a great evening, and just the first in the
series of speaker events to be held every other month. Please continue to
visit this website for the next scheduled event or send us your email
address at GHOFspeakesseries@sbcglobal.net and we will send you an
invitation.
Fall Fundraising a huge
success!
On October 29, 2006 the Glenview Hangar One
Foundation held it's first annual fundraiser. More than 130 guests
attended this year's event honoring Captain Charles "Chuck" Downey, the
youngest Naval Aviator of World War II, carrier qualifying from NASG. Also
honored for his exceptional contribution bringing the Naval Air Station
Glenview Museum to life was Bob Coffin, Curator of the museum.
The dinner and auction was enjoyed by all while
raising funds to continue museum operations for 2007. A portion of the
funds raised will also be used to support the effort to secure land from
the Village of Glenview that it has recently acquired from the Navy that
was previously a part of NASG. We are asking the land be provided as the
location to build a permanent museum and learning center to commemorate
those who served and the missions of NASG throughout it's rich
history.
New location for NASG Museum unofficially opened on
Feb. 12, 2006
After a difficult ten-month transition from its
previous location to the 2040 Lehigh Avenue, GHOF and the Naval Air
Station Glenview Museum looks toward late spring for an official Grand
Opening. Just in time for this year’s Annual Meeting, Bob Coffin the
Museum Committee Chair and Curator, Eric Lundahl, Irv Dannell and a number
of volunteers have installed the exhibits in the new Museum. As the
weather gets better, additional work on the exterior parking area and
entrance will be completed for the Grand Opening. Please watch for the
announcement on the specific date and time for the opening on this website
or call us at 847-657-0000 for more information.
Along with the opening, GHOF is planning a
Memorial Block Dedication over the Memorial Day weekend and a Gala Fund
Raiser event this fall. Starting in the next few months, the Museum will
also be hosting a series of special speaker “Hangar Flying” events. Guest
speakers’ topics will range from GNAS history/experiences, aviation,
military history, and more. Please refer to this site for more information
on speakers, dates and times.
March 26th, 2005 Hangar One’s Temporary Naval Air
Station Glenview Museum at the Glen Town Center
Closes:
Since June 2004, Hangar One has operated a
temporary NASG Museum at the Glen Town Center, 1951 Tower Drive, in
Glenview IL. The space for the temporary museum was generously donated by
OliverMcMillan, the developer that built the 45-acre commercial center
around NASG’s historic Hangar One.
Since January 31st 2005, Hangar One’s ability to
occupy the space has been on a month-to-month basis while OliverMcMillan
sought to secure a retail tenant. On March 21 st, OliverMcMillan notified
Hangar One that a retail tenant had been secured for one half of the
space, and that the artifacts in the temporary NASG Museum would have to
be removed for build-out construction.
As a result, the last day the public could visit
and experience the temporary NASG Museum was Saturday, March 26th from
10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Attendance, and emotions, were very high.
Hangar One has received
numerous supporting calls and e-mails from politicians and civilians
involved in community affairs, including State Senator Jeffery Schoenberg,
since the articles “Museum is told to shove off” and "Naval museum begins
a search for a new home" appeared in the March 22nd and March 26th
editions of the Chicago Tribune. Several meetings have been scheduled in
the near-term with the parties who have expressed an interest in assisting
Hangar One with its current NASG Museum challenges.
Hangar One’s only purpose is
to commemorate NASG veterans who served their country so we can live as
free people in a safe nation. The support that Hangar One requires to
realize a permanent NASG Museum needs to come from the Village of Glenview
and the State of Illinois. A permanent NASG Museum is community issue,
thus, solutions to Hangar One’s museum challenges need to be sponsored
from municipal and state levels.
Hangar One has recently received several proposals
for possible museum solutions from interested parties, including one from
OliverMcMillan. Hangar One sincerely appreciates these preliminary
proposals. However, we believe it is in the long-term interest of the
foundation to return artifacts on loan to their owners and store and
properly preserve our artifacts while we comprehensively evaluate site
options for a permanent NASG Museum.
Please support Hangar
One by writing our municipal, state and federal representatives in strong
support of Hangar One’s goal of realizing a permanent NASG Museum. These
public servants can be reached from this Contact Link.
Also consider making a charitable contribution,
and participating in Glenview's mission of being one of the premier
education-based communities in the country.

Goal
of HangarOne accomplished |
|
As
Hangar One is listed on the National Register of Historical Places, the
eventual goal of Hangar One was realized when developer OliverMcMillan
preserved the control tower and north and south pod facades of Hangar One,
along with certain structural components. In addition, the development
included the creation of Navy Park, the Naval Air Station Glenview
Museum, and the inclusion of NASG memorabilia into The Glen Town Center. The final
result of the Glen Town Center truly represents a Memorial to Freedom to
the veterans of Naval Air Station Glenview, and to all of the men and
women who served, or have served in the armed forces of the US.

Challenger Learning Center
Realization
of Challenger Learning Center
|
|
The
realization of a Challenger Learning Center in Glenview is another
one of the more important goals of the Foundation since its
inception. In 2000, Hangar One obtained a license from the Challenger
Center for Space Science Education to operate a Challenger
Learning Center in Northern Illinois. Founded by the families of the
Challenger |
 | 51-L
crew, after the Challenger disaster in 1986, the Challenger Center for
Space Science Education’s mission is for middle-school aged
students to be inspired, to
explore and learn in a space oriented, hands on simulator environment that
promotes a lifetime interest in mathematics, science and technology
related fields.
There are approximately 46 Challenger Learning
Centers located throughout the world, including one in Woodstock IL and
one in Bloomington, IL. Staffed by master teachers, the core of a
Challenger Learning Center is a two-room simulator, consisting of a space
station and a mission control center patterned after NASA’s Johnson Space
Center, and a scientific space lab ready for exploration. Hangar One
believes the realization of a Challenger Learning Center in Glenview will
enable certain students, from schools located in the greater Chicagoland
area, to achieve ranks at the highest educational levels in the United
States, in the areas of physical sciences and mathematics. More
information about Challenger in Illinois can be found here. :: Read More :: |

FORGET ME NOT by Bruce R.
Knuth
On January 4th,
1937 the first of you came to see me. I had just
been born, but I remember you all. As I grew,
still more of you came, some of you even brought your families. You came, times of war, times of conflict, times of
Police actions and even times of peace. You came
because, we as a nation felt that it was only right to be prepared, well trained and at the ready if needed. Some of you came from far away, And only stopped to rest briefly with me before you
returned to your mission. I remember you all, as I
know you still remember me. I remember those of
you from long ago. I remember those of you who
left and did not return. I remember those of you
who are far away. I remember those of you who are
here today. I will never forget any of you. Your memories might fade, but I will always remember
our past. The joys, the sorrows, the good times
and the bad times. We shared it all. We will never
forget. Now, at the ripe old age of 58, I must
leave you. But I know, through all of you I will
never be forgotten. Who am I you ask? NBU – Naval Air Station
